Albert Mayer Obituary

Albert "Al" Mayer passed away peacefully at Hines VA Hospital on Monday, November 11, 2024. Born on August 27, 1930, in Annaberg, Poland, in the present-day Ukraine, Albert was the oldest of five children of Bernhard and Anna (nee Kainz) Mayer. Displaced by World War II, Albert and his family were relocated several times throughout Europe, eventually ending up in Kosching, Germany.

Al and his family immigrated to the United States in August 1950, originally settling in Alabama with relatives, before relocating to Chicago. Al proudly served his adoptive country in the U.S. Army, in Panama, during the Korean Conflict. After his discharge, he continued his training as a tool and die maker and machinist.

In 1959, he married the love of his life Anne Hehir, and this year celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.

Al loved fishing, metal detecting, coin collecting and spending time with friends and family. He belonged to numerous clubs.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernhard and Anna Mayer, his brother Joseph, his daughter-in-law Victoria (nee Thompson) and a daughter Dymphna.

Al is survived by his wife Anne "Nancy", nee Hehir, his children John (the late Victoria), Mary Mayer-McHugh (Paul), Paul (Kate) and Julie (Mark) Ciesla, his grandchildren Molly McHugh, Patrick McHugh, Owen (Stephanie) Mayer, Stephen McHugh, Olivia (Patrick) Wetzel, Eva Mayer, Sean Mayer, Neil Mayer, Isabella Ciesla, Thomas Ciesla and Ryan Mayer, and great grandchildren, Liam, Elle, Leo, Finn, and Conor.
