Jerry James Sweet Ph.D, ABPP, 74, of Glenview, IL died March 9, 2026 at home after a long battle with cancer with his wife of 26 years, Debra Sweet, at his side.
Born December 1, 1951, he was the son of Waldo T. and Betty Jane Sweet (Flory). Besides his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by his identical twin brother Terry.
Survivors include his brother David (JoEllen), son Christopher (Anna), daughter Jamie (Stephen) and grandchildren Brendan and Dylan.
Dr. Sweet was on the Emeritus staff of Endeavor Health, formerly NorthShore University Health System, affiliated with the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. He was board certified in clinical neuropsychology and clinical psychology and served as Head of the Psychology Division, Director of the Neuropsychology service and Vice chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral sciences.
Throughout his 34 years of employment, he was active in training clinical health psychologists and clinical neuropsychologists through Predoctoral and Postdoctoral training programs. He also served as Co-Editor and, eventually, as the first Editor-in-Chief of The Clinical Neuropsychologist, official journal of the American Academy of Clinical Neuropsychology. Dr. Sweet also previously served as President of AACN, after years of service on the AACN Board of Directors.
Past awards include the 2011 Distinguished Lifetime Contribution to Neuropsychology from the American Academy of Clinical Neuropsychology, 2016 Distinguished Lifetime Contribution to Neuropsychology Award from the National Academy of Neuropsychology and the 2019 Distinguished Service and Contributions to the American board of Professional Psychology Award.
Private interment St. John's Cemetery, Bangor, PA.
A celebration of Jerry's life will be held at a later date.
