Martin Kearney

Martin Kearney, 90, native of Glentrague, County Galway, Ireland. Passed away Saturday, Jan. 29, 2022, surrounded by his wife of 53 years and his two children. Beloved husband of Patricia, nee Kilkenny, Kearney. Loving father of Martin (Meghan) Kearney and Mary (Howard Greynolds) Kearney. Proud grandfather of Claire, Cormaic, Manus, Finn and Riley; and treasured uncle to many. One of ten siblings: Stephen (deceased) and Josie Kearney of England; Tom and Bridget Kearney (both deceased) of England; Mary and Tom Morrin (both deceased) of Ireland; Henry Kearney (deceased) of Ireland; Paddy Kearney (deceased) of Ireland; Bridie and Chris (deceased) Conroy of Boston; Michael Joe Kearney of England; Peter and Theresa (deceased) Kearney of Ireland; John and Maureen Kearney stewards of the Kearney farm in Glentrague. Martin was born on a Connemara farm and educated on a mountaintop. Following in the footsteps of his older brother Stephen, he journeyed to England and Wales at a young age to work construction. He emigrated to America landing in Boston and Chicago before settling in Cleveland, where he met the love of his life, Pat. Through his vast travels, he always had a tale about "the man from England" and was never short a story to tell. He often would start conversations with strangers, inquiring their surname and commenting "I once worked with man named (insert name) in (insert city)" in the hopes of finding a common connection, which he inevitably always did. Martin was retired from the Rocky River School district and was active in the East and West Side Irish-American Clubs of Cleveland never showing up in anything less than a suit, regardless of the occasion. He had recently moved to Chicago to be closer to his kids and grandchildren. He was strong, brave and loving. His presence will be missed, but his spirit will live on forever. Visitation will take place Friday, February 4, 2022 at the M J Suerth Funeral Home, 6754 N. Northwest Hwy., Chicago, from 4-8 pm. Funeral Mass Saturday, 10 AM at St. Juliana Church, 7201 N Oketo (at Touhy Ave). Interment will take place immediately after at Maryhill Cemetery, Niles, IL.
